The ABC’s of good ROCK music!

As all children need to learn their ABC’s… so do those who are introduced to the wide world of (rock) music.  Maybe you have heard of these bands and maybe you haven’t.

For the ones you haven’t – do yourself a favour and go and check them out. Rock on!

(Feel free to click on some of the links and see where they lead you…either a video, song or a band bio)

A – Anberlin – does this song make you feel good?
B – Biffy Clyro – “I pronounce it aluminium, ‘Cause there’s an I next to the U and M”
C – Counting Crows

images
D – Dave Matthews Band – one of the best live acts I have ever seen.
E – Enter Shikari – this is the first video of theirs I ever saw and fell in love with them 🙂
F – Funeral for a Friend – this song always takes me into oblivion
G – Gaslight Anthem
H – Hugh Masekela
I – Incubus – you may just DIG this video  (they have a way with lyrics )
J – Jon Foreman (He writes very well.  Profound thoughts)
K – Kings of Leon
LLifehouse
M – Mat Kearney

which_one_stands_out__by_nemrot
One Black Sheep – fun video here

N – New Volume (a new band on the scene. Friends of mine)
O – Of Monsters and Men – this song of theirs was in this Film
P – P.O.D & (People live here)
Rise against have the ability to both push out hardcore rock songs that have you screaming along and then they can offer these breath taking ballads that make you feel so connected to your humanity.

Q – Queensryche
I discovered this band back in 1993 on the Last Action Hero soundtrack which is actually pretty cool. (The world seemed a lot more innocent back then)

RRelient K
S – Switchfoot & (Sound of Silence)
My wife showed me this video recently.  (A brilliant cover from the band, Disturbed – who we would not expect to do such great justice to the original song.  Captivating!)
T – Twin Forks
I am sure a lot of you haven’t discovered these guys yet. The lead singer is originally from Dashboard Confessional. Folk music at its best.
U – (The) Used – they have always had clever artwork
V – Vocal Few
W – Weezer
X – X – I had to throw on these South African Rock Legends.  I believe to be named after the Springbok Hit Parade compilations.
YYellow Card
Z – Zooropa = – an album from U2.  I really like their song NUMB – one of their better songs!  (Bizarre video too.)

What would your ABC of rock music look like?

Alexithymia

I like to pay attention to life’s little connections.
Today’s word of the day is Alexithymia.

Here is it’s meaning

  1. Psychiatry. difficulty in experiencing, expressing, and describing emotional responses.

But as soon as I saw the word arrive on my phone I thought of the song by Anberlin

“Alexithymia”

Don’t try to wake me up
Even if the sun really does come out tomorrow
Don’t believe anything you say
Anymore, in the morn, in the morning
Bricks to this old house are breaking
Steel would have weathered but now forlorning
It’s alarming how loud the silence screams
No warn, no warn, no warning
Addictions fill the table where the family used to sit
And conversate
Conversate to the sounds
To the sounds of a record player
With it’s jumping needle and the lights that grow dim over time

With downcast eyes
There’s more to living than being alive
With downcast eyes
There’s more to living than being alive

Are you where you thought you’d be
So beautiful and only twenty-three
Opposition rests in the hearts
With no, with no, with no opportunity
It’s not that we don’t talk
It’s just no one really listens and honesty fades
Like a politician lost in the course
All smiles and no one remembers our names

With downcast eyes
There’s more to living than being alive
With downcast eyes
There’s more to living than being alive
With downcast eyes
There’s more to living than being alive
With downcast eyes
There’s more to living than being alive

Don’t try to wake me up
Even if the sun really does come out tomorrow
Don’t believe anything I say
Anymore, in the morn, in the morning

Day 23 – Music

I love music.  I really do.  I’d like to say of myself that I think in lyrics.  I have a library of lyrics in my mind.

Emery, Underoath, The Almost, Relient K, Switchfoot, Twin Forks, Dave Matthews Band, Thousand Foot Krutch.

I often tell people, the two big languages that God speaks to me in; are “being in creation,” gosh, the world is so full of evidence of the Creator.

The other language is that of lyrics.  I can be driving in my car, and a lyric jumps out at me grabbing me by the throat and heart.

Kings of Leon, John Mayer, Lorde, Dear Reader, Gravity Wins Again, MxPx, Pearl Jam, REM.

I often have my iTunes playing or a CD at home jamming.  And often variate the bands on my usb stick in my car.

(By the way, that’s a great invention!)

The Used, Taking Back Sunday, Angels and Airwaves, Blink 182, Alter Bridge, Prime Circle.

I have this controversial theory about music and it’s influences.

I am not a fan of the “pop culture” following of music.  People only liking a song because everyone else does.  Or because it has radio play.  How fickle!

The worst answer to give me; when I ask you what music you like is to say: “I listen to everything. I don’t have a favourite.”

Rubbish!  That means you don’t have a leg to stand on… in the music world.  Harsh, I know.  But have some conviction about music.  Know why you like the song you like?  And don’t just know the SINGLE… that’s a poor sighted view of music.

Speaking of rubbish…

Garbage, Matt Redman, Dead Poetic, Anberlin, The Classic Crime, Eminem, Matthew Mole.

About my theory. I battle with hip-hop.  I mean I dig Eminem.  He sings about real issues…

But here is my controversial theory:

when I was growing up, a lot of people would refer to ROCK music as the devil’s music.  That’s crap!

In fact, I’d tell you the devil is having a field day with pop music and hip-hop.

So in my country, a lot of folk who have AIDS (except those who’ve been raped or born with it) get it from their own stupid actions.

And you know what is their influence.  Their bullshit pop music that they listen to:

Think about the lyrics: “I want to undress you” “dancing right up against you on the dance-floor” “where you going girl lookin’ like that, come over here” ah man… the list is endless… full of sexual innuendo, sleeping with one another, and: a girl is just a “piece of meat” that industry is pumped with that nonsense.

And then these people are like “why do, I have AIDS?” stop sleeping around!  Stop listening to the crap that you do!

Bastille, Imagine Dragons, Ard Matthews, John Ellis, Johnny Clegg, Vusi Mahlasela, Coldplay, Rise Against, Chevelle.

There are good movies that you should watch about music.

Music & Lyrics, Almost Famous and my favourite is August Rush.

There have been bands that have inspired me along the way, convicted me as I have grown up.

Blindside, As Cities Burn, Counting Crows, The Cure, Violent Femmes.

I once interviewed the lead singer of the band, Blindside from Sweden.  I was working as a DJ on Link FM down in the Eastern Cape. (South Africa.)  Ah, I really loved that job.

Enter Shikari,  Foo Fighters, POD, Pillar, Skillet, Jars of Clay, Aaron Gillispie, Thrice , Dustin Kensrue.

Here are just some lyrics that have jumped out at me:

“But I know as I hammered those nails into your beautiful hands
Your eyes still try to search for mine, but I look away
Now your eyes are the only thing that can save me” Blindside

“I am a nomad – a wanderer; I have nowhere to lay my head down.
There’s no point in putting roots too deep when I’m moving on.
I’m not settling for this unsettling town.
My heart is filled with songs of forever –
Of a city that endures, where all is made new.” Thrice

“Then I fly back to my nest, I fly back with my nuclear but everything is different
So I wait, my yearn for home is broadened, patriotism expanded by callings from beyond
So I pack my things nothing precious all things sacred” Alanis Morissette

Paramore, Funeral for a Friend, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mat Kearney, Nirvana, Oasis, Live, 12 Stones, Lifehouse.

And to make this post even more fun, some of the band names, if you click on them… will lead you to a cool music video…

there are still many bands that can go on my list… but I don’t want to go on and on and on and on…

Dear Anberlin

Anberlin-2012

Dear Anberlin,

You recently shared this new with us:

I am sad to hear about your final album.
However at the same time I am very THANKFUL for the journey we have had together.
Yes, you may not realise it; but as your band has grown; many fans have grown alongside you.
We’re all older now, we’re all a little wiser and yet still learning new things.

I am thankful for the effort that you as a band have put into every album you offered to us (your fans).

On each album there have been songs that have moved this wondering and wandering soul.

Your genuine, heartfelt lyrics have often opened up inspiration and truth within me.
Here are some lyrics that have grabbed my attention thoroughly:

“Fall asleep, don’t fall asleep Don’t fall asleep
(They lied when they said that the good die young” Godspeed

“Airports to Amsterdam
There’s nothing that we can do now
I’m convinced, oh, that you’re right
You’re right where you belong,
Beside me, to remind me
Did you ever think this far behind me
You would see the world for what it was
And who we really were
Oh they love us American boys
Anywhere, say anywhere
As long as I’m with you
Anything, ask anything
We’ll watch the world go by” Uncanny

“I wanna be your last, first kiss
That you’ll ever have
I wanna be your last, first kiss
Amazing how life turns out the way that it does
We end up hurting the worst, the only ones we really love” Inevitable

“Silent alarms are ringing
Sounds of revolt draw near
A new united front
That you will come to fear
We will hold together
To become the change
Voice for the voiceless
With every common man engaged” The Resistance

“Live, I wanna live inspired
Die, I wanna die for something higher than myself
Live and die for anyone else
The more I live I see this life’s not about me” Burn Out Brighter (Northern Lights)

“No motives just cover
Justify the things that come to mind
All pictures no color
All the wrong that you think you’ve made right
Dead inside, yours is mine, dead inside
Are you alive? Somebody help me, are you alive?” Little Tyrants

“Are you depraved, or are you deceived?
Excuses aside, stop saying please, please.
Are you depraved, or are you deceived?
Excuses aside, stop saying please, please.
You’re not a slave, so get off your knees.
You’re not a slave, so get off your knees.” Depraved

(wow, wow, wow… Depraved is a deep song.)

I also decided to put together; a top 10 of Anberlin songs; that I have constantly liked along the way. In no particular order:

1) Breaking
2) Godspeed
3) Uncanny
4) The Resistance
5) Cadence
6) The Haunting
7) Depraved
8) Burn Out Brighter (Northern Lights)
9) Little Tyrants
10) Never take friendship personal

As this chapter ends; and new ones begin; may you continue to live inspired!

Godspeed,
Darrel

PS. If you don’t know any of their songs; here are three videos to check out:

1) Feel Good Drag

2) Impossible

3) Godspeed

Song of the week 37 (Anberlin – The Haunting)

I have always liked this song. Not sure why I came across it this week.
The title is apt with how the song is laid out.
This song is also transporting. Taking you to other scenes of your life.
Enjoy it. Let me know what you think…

(And I just love the word “uncanny”)

Anberlin – The Haunting

Up on this hill, in this uncanny house
The wind makes this place creak, the lights they are flickering.
The moon she is lurking, the clock it stopped working
At a quarter past three.
There’s something dancing here in the shadows
And I wish it were us.

You haunt me baby, you haunt me here tonight.
You haunt me baby, you haunt me here tonight.
Tonight.
Tonight.

Can’t get your memory, off of my mind, my mind.
Just want your heartbeat, on top of mine, of mine.
There’s something dancing, here in the shadows
And I wish it were us.

You haunt me baby, you haunt me here tonight.
You haunt me baby, you haunt me here tonight.
Tonight.
Tonight.

Up on this hill, in this uncanny house.
Your spirit I can’t see, but I still believe
I can feel your breath on me.

You haunt me baby, you haunt me here tonight.
You haunt me baby, you haunt me here tonight.
Tonight.
Tonight.

Up on this hill, in this uncanny house.

Song of the week 21 (Anberlin – Change the world (lost ones))

This weekend I have had these lyrics racing in my head:

“We could change the world, we could strike the chord
We are the lost ones, we are the lost ones
We could re-write history, if only you and me”

So that’s why i offer this song to you today, this week for song of the week:

A song about bringing change! Go and do likewise!  Check out the rest of Anberlin HERE

“Change The World (Lost Ones)”

If I could write one letter to the world as we know it
I would list these rhymes that mean everything to me
Heartache temporary, bullets only stop your blood
Pain will live on and on
In everyone, in everyone

And we could change, we could change it down
We could change the world, we could strike the chord
We are the lost ones, we are the lost ones
We could re-write history, if only you and me
We are the lost ones, we are the lost ones
And we could change it down

The bottle holds no answers
His lips can only sway
Chemicals imbalance
Who needs them anyway?
Desire is close at hand
Her lips can only sway
There’s more to life than this
Don’t give yourself away
Don’t give yourself away

And we could change, we could change it down
We could change the world, we could strike the chord
We are the lost ones, we are the lost ones
We could re-write history, if only you and me
We are the lost ones, we are the lost ones
And we could change it down

Don’t give yourself away
Don’t give yourself away
Don’t give yourself away

And we could change it down, we could change it down, we could change it
We could change the world, we could strike the chord
We are the lost ones, we are the lost ones
We could re-write history, if only you and me
We are the lost ones, we are the lost ones
We could change the world, if only you and me
We are the lost ones, we are the lost ones

Song of the week 20 (Anberlin – Dismantle.Repair)

I like the raw honesty of this song.

The epic musicianship.

But how the song covers a guy in all sorts of places in his life…

and the urge: “save me from myself.”

“Dismantle. Repair.”

One last glance from a taxi cab
Images scar my mind
Four weeks’ve felt like years
Since your full attention was all mine
The night was young and so were we
Talked about life, God, death, and your family
Didn’t want any promises,
Just my undivided honesty, and you said

Oh oh, things are gonna change now for the better
Oh oh, things are gonna change, oh, they’re gonna change

I am the patron saint of lost causes
A fraction of who I once believed (change)
only a matter of time
Opinions I would try and rewrite
If life had background music playing your song
I’ve got to be honest, I tried to escape you
But the orchestra plays on, and they sang

Oh oh, things are gonna change now for the better
Oh oh, things are gonna change

[Chorus 2x]
Hands, like secrets, are the hardest thing to keep from you
Lines and phrases, like knives, your words can cut me through
Dismantle me down (repair)
You dismantle me
You dismantle me

Give me time to prove
Prove I want the rest of yours (prelude)
Call this a prelude to a lifetime of you
It’s not that I hang on every word
I hang myself on what you repeat
It’s not that I keep hanging on
I’m never letting go

[Chorus 2x]
Hands, like secrets, are the hardest thing to keep from you
Lines and phrases, like knives, your words can cut me through
Dismantle me down (repair)
You dismantle me
You dismantle me

Save me from myself
Save me from myself
Help me save me from myself
Save me from myself

Oh oh, things are gonna change now for the better
Oh oh, things are gonna change

[Chorus 4x]
Hands, like secrets, are the hardest thing to keep from you
Lines and phrases, like knives, your words can cut me through
Dismantle me down (repair)
You dismantle me
You dismantle me

Song of the week 15 (Anberlin – Godspeed)

This song is screaming in my head today… especially the lyrics

“they lied when they said the good die young.”
my heart is broken for a life lost. A friend of a friend died.
She was so young. on the surface she seemed okay
yet inside she was battling in her life.
how many people walk past us carrying a weight that we don’t see…

Anberlin – Godspeed

Burning down neverland (scatter the ashes)
White lines black tar the matches
Is this another death by misadventure
Tell me what you got, what you really got (hey hey!)
We’ll rest in our graves,
Lexington course your veins
Sleepers can’t just wake the dead
When needles and lovers collapse on guilty beds

Fall asleep, don’t fall asleep
Don’t fall asleep

(They lied when they said that the good die young)

THEY LIED WHEN THEY SAID THE GOOD DIE YOUNG!
woah-oh-ah-oh
THEY LIED WHEN THEY SAID THE GOOD DIE YOUNG!
stay with me, stay with me tonight

Burning down bridges now (scatter the ashes)
Godspeed to all you’re after
Is this a life left just to remember
Tell them who you were, who you really were (hey hey!)
Kill yourself slowly over time, fashion statement suicide
She’s still asleep in a Chelsea hotel
Bad turns to worse, and the worst turns into hell

Fall asleep, don’t fall asleep
Don’t fall asleep

(God save the eyes that dim tonight)

THEY LIED WHEN THEY SAID THE GOOD DIE YOUNG!
woah-oh-ah-oh
THEY LIED WHEN THEY SAID THE GOOD DIE YOUNG!
Stay with me, stay with me tonight

WOAH-OH-AH-OH

THEY LIED, WHEN THEY SAID THE GOOD DIE YOUNG!
woah-oh-ah-oh
THEY LIED WHEN THEY SAID THE GOOD DIE YOUNG!
Stay with me, stay with me tonight
THEY LIED WHEN THEY SAID THE GOOD DIE YOUNG!
woah-oh-ahoh
THEY LIED WHEN THEY SAID THE GOOD DIE YOUNG!
Stay with me, stay with me tonight

The perks of being a wallflower

Wow wow wow! What a great movie.
Such a cool Indie film. I love how moving and inspiring stories arrive in my life at the right time.

Uncanny.
Go and watch it. What’s so warming about the movie is that actress (Hermione from Harry Potter) who for the first times steps out of her role surrounded by wizardry and plays as a stunning girl whose outlook on life is rather original and rather attractive.

Go watch it!

… So while I am pondering…
I thought of Beggars.
I drive past a fair amount of them each day.
I have noted a “hunch” that they walk with. They look defeated. And they may even be.

However in my head plays the lyrics by Anberlin “you’re not a slave, so get off your knees.”

They must stop living like that!
Yet, even we who are not on road sides begging, how we still live like slaves…

Last thought, while blogging:

I have met many people in the past 32 years of my life. About 8 different locations, 3 different countries.

And the true friends I have made… Do not show that friendship with “words” but with their lives, their action.

I recall how many people have said to me “we will stay in touch” … I believed them, just to be let down.
On the surface was where our friendship was.

The deeper friends… Don’t just speak… They live out their friendship with me.

For them, I am grateful.
I think of quite a few I am still in touch with abroad or locally.

Those friendships have flowed so naturally.
Beautiful.
