The Insensitivity of Curiosity

This past week there has been some serious fire-fighting going on here in Somerset West. A lot of damage has been caused by these veld fires which has burnt down some houses too.

The peculiar thing – is the behaviour of people. (About a year ago I wrote about a similar thing when a house in Secunda exploded.)

We are all curious. But could our curiosity be insensitive? The radio had informed the community that certain roads were closed and that the authorities asked people to not come near to “check out” the damage done by the fire. But what did the people do? They went anyway…

Again, people seem to thrive on bad news. We like to pry on the misfortune of others. Rather insensitive, don’t you think?

But on the flip side. When KFM (a local radio station) put out a request for sunscreen and lip ice for the firefighters… the community responded well. They pulled together to provide aid.

I drove passed Strand Fire Station on the way home today and I noticed that people were still dropping off things that were needed. I am impressed by the community’s help.

People are peculiar. We pry and but we care too.
