Song of the week 43 (Johnny Clegg – Asimbonanga)

This song seems fitting for today.
At 11am, there will be a memorial for Nelson Mandela.
It’s been a strange couple of days.
On the go,
Haven’t had time to absorb the great loss.
But I know something incredibly big is happening in the world right now.
And I feel like doors to a new era are about to burst open.
i feel
HOPE is knocking…

I guess many people have requested or played this sing over the last few days.
HOWEVER to be honest, this song has been one of my favourites of Johnny Clegg regardless of the lyrics subject matter!
These lyrics come with the translation:

Asimbonanga (We have not seen him)
Asimbonang’ uMandela thina (We have not seen Mandela)
Laph’ekhona (In the place where he is)
Laph’ehleli khona (In the place where he is kept)

Oh the sea is cold and the sky is grey
Look across the Island into the Bay
We are all islands till comes the day
We cross the burning water

Chorus….

A seagull wings across the sea
Broken silence is what I dream
Who has the words to close the distance
Between you and me

Chorus….

Steve Biko, Victoria Mxenge
Neil Aggett
Asimbonanga
Asimbonang ‘umfowethu thina (we have not seen our brother)
Laph’ekhona (In the place where he is)
Laph’wafela khona (In the place where he died)
Hey wena (Hey you!)
Hey wena nawe (Hey you and you as well)
Siyofika nini la’ siyakhona (When will we arrive at our destination)

(Nelson Mandela appears in this live version of the song.)
