Once Twice THRICE (a lyrics study of a great band) “grab a drink whilst reading”

(A study of a good band)

When people are worried about raising the kids; or how to pay off the mortgage bond, or how to solve world hunger… here I come with a random write up about a band that “in the pop culture or radio culture” most people would not have heard of them.

REMEMBER these are my thoughts and my opinions and my conclusions of the band; Thrice.

I write this to make you aware of this band and their awesome lyrics.

I have seen them live in London; I have heard most of their songs.  Their last album: Beggars, it almost felt like Dustin Kensrue and the boys jumped in my head to write songs to answer the questions and thoughts I had there.  Incredible!

Here is my little study on their lyrics and how they relate to scripture.

You see they don’t label themselves a Christian band, yet their lyrics are so potent.

And you can’t help but think (when you see them live) and all the fans are singing along word for word.  The people who don’t have a relationship with Jesus; I can’t help but think what hearing and singing these words do… how they tug on their heart strings…

1)   All The World is Mad

We are brimming with cumbersome, murderous greed

And malevolence deep and profound.

We do unspeakable deeds

Does our wickedness know any bounds?

Something’s gone terribly wrong

With everyone

All the world is mad

Darkness brings terrible things

The sun is gone

What vanity! Our sad, wretched fires

We can’t medicate man to perfection again

We can’t legislate peace in our hearts

We can’t educate sin from our souls

It’s been there from the start

But the blind lead the blind into bottomless pits

Still we smile and deny that we’re cursed

But of all our iniquities

Ignorance may be the worst

This song is about the state of the world.  That is the truth.  The world is mad.  We need to come to terms with that and then come to our Saviour who can put peace in our hearts and eradicate the sin our souls.  Look around, you’ll see the world is evil.  This song is a wake-up call to that.

2)   At the Last

It’s a shame that some must go without

But I was no fool to think it might be my problem

Needy hands were reaching out

I kept my spare change and my pride in a tight fist

(In a tight fist)

And now at the last, everything is changed in this pale light

That death has cast on all I’ve done – on all I’ve done

I’m a good man on the whole

Who could blame me for looking out for number one?

I never killed, I never stole

A small indulgence now and then, so what of it?

I’m a good man

I’m a good man

Am I a good man?

I thought I was

The rewards of this life now count for naught

My body: soon buried and left to rot

The time’s gone, how quickly it all has passed

My God, now I see how I’ve squandered each and every breath

It’s not our deeds that save us.  But our deeds need to be response to the life God has given us.  How often are we stingy with our money? “spare change and pride in a tight fist”

We think…being a good man is good enough.  No way!  It’s by the grace of God that we have been saved.

Romans 3: 23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are all justified freely by his grace…”

3)   Come all You weary

Come all you weary with your heavy loads

Lay down your burdens find rest for your souls

Cause my yoke is easy and my burden is kind

I’ll take yours upon me and you can take mine

Come all you weary move through the earth

You’ve been spurned at fine restaurants and kicked out of church

Got a couple of loaves sit down at my feet

Lend me your ears and break bread with me

Based on Matthew 11: 28 “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.”

Say what!  They’re sing exact scripture here! Pretty cool!

4)   Beggars

“All you champions of science and rulers of men

Can you summon the sun from its sleep?

Does the earth seek your counsel on how fast to spin?

Can you shut up the gates of the deep?

Don’t you know that all things hang, as if by string

O’er the darkness – poised to fall?

If there’s one thing I know in this life: we are beggars all”

I dig this song so much.  We’re all beggars.  We need His grace.

“Does the earth seek your counsel…” that part reminds me of God’s questions to Job in Job 38.  God is the one who sets the world in motion… etc.

5)   For Miles

“I know one day, all our scars will disappear, like the stars at dawn

and all of our pain, will fade away when morning comes

and on that day when we look backwards we will see, that everything is changed

and all of our trials, will be as milestones on the way

and as long as we live, every scar is a bridge to someone’s broken heart

and there’s no greater love, than that one shed his blood for his friends

on that day all of the scales will swing to set all the wrongs to right

all of our tears, and all of our fears will take to flight

but until then all of our scars will still remain, but we’ve learned that if we’ll

open the wounds and share them then soon they start to heal”

This song for me speaks of things being made a whole eventually.

Reminds me of Romans 8:  22 “We know that the whole creation has been groaning…” (See the whole passage)

6)   Image of the Invisible

We’re more than carbon and chemicals

We are the image of the invisible

Free will is ours and we can’t let go

We are the image of the invisible

We can’t allow this, the quiet cull

We are the image of the invisible

So we sing out this, our canticle

We are the image of the invisible

I like this song about the image we are created in, 2 verses come to mind:

Romans 1:  20 “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities- his divine power, his eternal nature – have been clearly seen.”

Colossians 1: 15 “He is the image of the invisible God”

And then also the bit in Genesis 1, we are created in God’s image.  Ain’t it cool!

7)   Identity Crisis

Image marred by self-infliction

Private wars on my soul waged

Heart is scarred by dual volitions

Juxtaposed and both engaged

Kindle flame, a test of faith

Pray help me see it through

I put all my trust in you

Refine hate and love

Fall afresh on me

End this crisis of

A song about looking at ourselves and realising who we are.  We need to hear who God sees us as.  We need to find our identity in Christ.

8)   Like Moths to Flames

once again these bitter herbs

the perfect compliment to all your cryptic words

I nod but don’t know what to say, but I know you

and I believe you’re who you say you are so I?

I will follow you, lay down my life

I would die for you, this very night

once again the bread and wine

but it seems the meanings may be deeper still this time

and you surprised me when you said I’d fall away, don’t you know me

I could never be ashamed of you, no I?

I’ve never been this cold, the fire’s gravity compels

like planets cling to sol, I feel my orbit start to fail

like moths to flame I come, too close and all my oaths are burned

as stars begin to run, all my accusers take their turn

and calling curses down, from my lips lies like poison spill

and then that awful sound, the sound of prophesy fulfilled

and then I met your eyes, and I remember everything

and something in me dies, the night that I betrayed my king

This is an excellent song about the relationship between Peter and Jesus.  All the things Peter declared and yet he betrays His king.  A very challenging message!  I really like the lyrics in this song… well written.

9)   Music Box

we move for all mankind, a million miles from everything we’ve ever known

and we’re on their hearts and minds, a million heads are bowed to bring us safely home

hemmed in by emptiness, a million ways that everything could be undone

this hollow in my chest is filled with reasons not to sing but I found one, I know

we are not alone, we feel an unseen love

we are sons and heirs of grace

we are children of a light that never dims

a love that never dies, keep your chin up child

and wipe the tears from your eyes

I like the line “sons and heirs of grace” (Wow, I’d like to think God smiles when hearing this band’s good lyrics.)

And the “unseen love” part… wow that is so like God’s love, right?

10)Stand and feel your worth

We will wield a second birth, whet our wits and knives.

Wrap our knees in earth, wrap ourselves in light.

Wake, we will weigh and drink this cup.

We will burn, but we will not burn up.

Wake, feel your worth, O my soul.

Speak the word, the word that can save us all.

Awed by grace, I fall on my face.

And scream the word that can save us all.

You are worth it!  Stand up and feel your worth.

11)The Messenger

Mark me with Fear and Trembling

Send someone else instead

I know my world is ending

I can’t repay my debt

Can I carry such a heavy burden?

Can I move when I am paralyzed?

I see a fire behind a heavy curtain

I lean in closer and I close my eyes

Kiss the coals; breathe in smoke

And I say, “Here I am, send me.”

Lifts my soul, free and so unafraid

“Here I am, send me, send me.”

Free and so unafraid

“Here I am, send me.”

Mark me with fire and send me

Among the living dead

They cannot comprehend me;

I watch the sickness spread

How can they hear me when their hearts are hardened?

How can they see me when they close their eyes?

So they can tell that I’m an easy target

A wooden saw is quite a way to die

Based on Isaiah’s call in Isaiah 6: 1- 9

Isaiah’s Commission

1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;

the whole earth is full of his glory.”

4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”

And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

9 He said, “Go and tell this people:

Incredible hey!  So I’d like to say that God speaks to me through lyrics… I’m grateful for that.
